Call Me By Your Ndn Name: The Unsolicited Special
Created, Written, & Starring: Randy Schmucker
Randy, 22. > 1km away. In a stand-up-esque one-person special: a young, flamboyant Indigenista explores themes of gay dating, “Indigenous allies”, dads and space.
Born and raised in unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory, Randy Schmucker is Anishinaabe with ancestors and family in Lac Des Milles Lacs First Nation. Randy graduated from the University of Ottawa with an Honours Bachelor Degree in Indigenous Studies (with a minor in Feminist Studies), and for his whole life, has pursued dance, theatre, art and music as passions. Randy is new to the comedy scene, however, performing his first set in “Got Land?” in September 2019. His theoretical and academic background in Indigenous and Feminist studies nuances his work.
A word from the creators:
"There came a point in the past year, after many failed dates, and after many failed conversations with family members, where I thought to myself: “how do I make these experiences profitable?” Stand-up is definitely not the answer, but it’s worth a shot, right? Joking aside, it takes a strong heart to cry about things, and an even stronger heart to find the funny. It takes a thick skin to experience microaggressions, face rejection in the dating sphere, have an awkward relationship with your father and instead of going to therapy, star in a comedy show!"
